What are you referring to as the "receptacle"? And what model are you working on?
If a model with a battery ignition there should be power from the ignition switch going to the center lead of the handlebar dimmer switch with the other two wires from the handlebar switch to the headlight. The third lead on the headlight is the ground wire.

This is getting complicated. I have no power to the headlight.
1. The bulb is good bright and dim
2. I have two wires from the headlight going to the switch one on either side of the three wire receptacle and one wire (hot) going to the center receptacle. This makes sense as either position the center wire gives power and it is hot.
All according to the diagram.
3.I have continuity from one of the red wires at the headlight when the switch is on bright OR dim, and no continuity on the other red wire regardless if the switch is on bright or dim.
