i researched some old european bikes with similar girder designs and they all used springs. Some only used one spring in compression with friction disc rebound control and some used additional springs for rebound control. I'm thinking of maybe modifying one to use two springs in compression and adding automotive deck lid struts to either side for rebound control kind of like a Vincent girder.

They show up on the net every once in a while. I got to ride one some 35 years ago, it was really bouncy. Personally I'd recommend against it but some friction in the snubber joints or a small shock absorber might make it ride OK.

has anybody seen a rubber band fork converted to use a spring ?
