I didn't see Duanes pics. But every 49 model I have ever had in my shop in the last 25 years, have all been the same.No reinforcement and all of them still had a welded tube neck. I have one of Uncle Tom's 49's here right now. Never been touched. It is a mid/late VIN in the 6700 range. It also has the welded tube neck and no footrest reinforcement.

My pic shows a 1950 frame, but it has an old British Lycette seat on it. It's a little bigger than the 48-49 seat

Steve,

While you're looking at Chapter 4, take a look at Frame #3.

Offhand, the support tube looks OK to me. It does look a little short, but that just may be the angle in the photo. If both footrest-and-shaft-s go fully inside...

The 1949 used the same kickstand as 1948 - this was not changed until 1950. The 1949 support tube does NOT have a spring mounting tab.

This brings up an interesting question about the 1948 frame recall. The Shop Dopes do NOT say what was breaking on the 1948 frames. We've assumed it was the welded fork neck. But perhaps it really was the footrest shaft that was breaking. Or both.

It COULD be that 1949 frames had the reinforcement under the footrest support tube (see Mutt's photo in Frame #3). Mutt - what say ye?

(P.S. Mutt - isn't that photo a 1950 frame with a 1948-1949 seat on it?).

Duane, send 'em on

DAVE HENNESY:
DO YOU WANT PICTURES AS NOTED ABOVE TO USE IN THE HOW TO RESTORE SECTION?. I MADE THIS REBUILD PART NOTED ABOVE AND ANOTHER PART USED WHEN THE ONLY PROBLEM IS BROKEN OFF TANGS.
