Duane,

I'm back from Italy, had a great time, although my Italian has not improved very much. The best feature of Italy is Italian women - beautiful and stylish (think Sophia Loren). They pay a lot of attention to their looks - no tattoos, no nose rings, no T-shirts with words on them. And they all jump off two-story buildings to get into their blue jeans. Delizioso.

Harley listed two Hummer horns, the 69001-55 and the 69001-55A. The -55A appeared in either 1958 or 1959 (it definitely appears in the 1959 Spare Parts Catalog Supplement, and Mutt is going to check his 1958 Supplement one of these days!!). Could the -55 be the expensive 2-note horn, and the -55A the cheapo 1-note version?

Harley was always economical in their business practices, and since the Hummer did not sell in vast quantities, perhaps they decided to save a nickel by changing to the 1-note horn. ???

On the other hand, it appears that Yoder was winding down operations by about 1959. I did a lot of searching some time back, and I found old ads from the 1940s and 1950s, but nothing from the 1960s. I believe the last thing I found was from 1959.

A couple of old ads and info:

Perhaps Yoder consolidated their line-up in the late 1950s, forcing Harley to use a different horn. Or perhaps Harley requested the cheaper 1-note model.

I bought my horn in a collection of NOS parts many years back. I'm pretty sure it is original Harley, but perhaps it is the -55A?

Any thoughts on the differences between the -55 and the -55A?

It shows several horns, and an actual TOOTER.

Brent:

The Yoder bulb horn had Yoders name, etc on the mounting
flange web casting and it was there on all their 1 note and 2 note horns. The bugle end was where the lettering is. It read, "Hollywood Goose Horn"
Yoder made several versions of the Bulb horn for use on
bicycles, tricycles, boats cars, etc. Yoder also made the
"Wolf Whistle" horn as used on cars, trucks that utilized
the vacuum system rather than a bulb.

Of little or no interest, my barbers name is Yoder. I know nothing about his horn, bugle, or reed and I am not going to ask.

2 note, non-labeled horn? This is news to me. Did Harley have Yoder remove their name? With Dave I think one note will be fine as he's not the kind of guy that toots his own horn. But, now that he'll have a new bulb and a fully reloaded horn, that may change.

DAVE HENNESEY:

YOUR HORN ARRIVED AS DESCRIBED WITH ITS FRACTURED BULB. IT HAS NOW BEEN REPAIRED AND TOOTS AS INTENDED.

BE AWARE, THIS HORN IS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL TYPE YODER HORN
USED ON THE "HUMMER" MODEL. IT IS THE "GOOSE HORN" MODEL AND HAS THE ONE NOTE REED. IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY AT THE INSIDE LIP OF THE BUGLE END, YOU WILL SEE THIS MOLDED INTO THE BUGLE LIP.
THE GOOSE HORN MODEL WAS/IS THE SAME IN ALL RESPECTS EXCEPT FOR THE ONE NOTE REED AND THE MOLDED LABEL IN CONTRAST TO
THE MORE EXPENSIVE (ABOUT 50 CENTS) 2 NOTE, NON LABELED YODER MODEL.

THIS USELESS INFORMATION NOW SAID, YOUR HORN IS READY TO RETURN IN ALL ITS GLORY TO BE USED TO ANNOUNCE YOUR ARRIVAL WHENEVER, WHEREVER. ON THE DOWNSIDE, WITH THE ONE NOTE TOOT, EVERYONE WILL KNOW YOU HAVE THE CHEAP SKATE YODER MODEL.
YOUR HORN WILL ARRIVE JUST AFTER YOU RETURN FROM ITALY.
