We didn't need helmets back then, 'cause they hadn't invented cell phones yet, and no one was "TWD" - Texting While Driving. People actually kept their eyes on the road.
Not so in the modern world...

I began riding in 1953 on my 1952 Harley 125 and no one I knew wore a helmet in those days except racers. Look at pictures of guys like Joe Leonard and Paul Goldsmith who were Harley flat track racers.
The headwear of choice was the Harley cap with a white bill like Brando wore in the "Wild One" movie.
