On my '66 bobcat the carb flange was also cupped as shown in your pic. The 2 cycle eng. is more sensitive to vacuum than a 4 cyl. engine.
Generally, the cup shown is due to being over tightened and not having a washer under the nut to distribute the crushing force of the mounting nut. I put my carb flange on a flat sanding disc and made it flat. With a new gasket and a pair of SAE washers all should be good.
Remember this is aluminum. Do not over torque anything. If you 're not sure find out before you over torque it. I use a lot of thread lock.

Dave,

Don't touch them flanges! At least until you get a definitive answer.

I haven't taken the carb off my 1955 Hummer in awhile, but I believe the flanges are made that way. Why? I have no idea. But I remember looking at them and saying WTF? And then bolting the carb on anyway.

Maybe Mutt or another expert can chime in with a definitive answer - and some wisdom.

Dave

DOES ANY ONE IN HUMMERVILLE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO KNOW HOW TO STRAIGHTEN THESE FLANGES? I DONT HAVE A CLUE HOW THIS HAPPENED. IT WAS LIKE THIS WHEN I GOT THE BIKE PROJECT. I DID'NT REALLY WANT TO PUT ANY HEAT TO THE FLANGES, BUT MAY'BE SOME ONE ELSE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM AND WILL CHIME IN. THANK'S IN ADVANCE.
