FROM YOUR PICTURES OF THE FINISHED FRAME AND SPRINGS, BE AWARE THAT YOU DID NOT FOLLOW YOUR ORIGINAL EXAMPLE. FIRSTLY, A CANVAS HAS TO BE RIVETED TO THE BACK BOW OF THE FRAME AS YOU SEE IN THE LEFT LOWER PICTURE YOU POSTED. THE FRONT PORTION OF THE CANVAS IS FOLDED AND RIVETED TOGETHER, THEN SLOTTED FOR THE FRONT 8 SPRINGS. THEN AN 1/8TH IN ROD IS INSERTED THROUGH THE CANVAS FOLD. THEN ONE END OF THE FRONT SPRING IS INSERTED THROUGH A SLOT AND AROUND THE ROD. THE OTHER END IS ATTACHED TO FRONT OF THE FRAME AS YOU HAVE DONE. ALL 8 NOSE SPRINGS ARE DONE THE SAME WAY. THE TWO METAL TABS YOU NOTE WERE MEANT TO HOLD THE REAR OF THE COVER DOWN. THE FRONT WAS HELD IN PLACE BY A SPRING THAT WAS UNDER THE NOSE PORTION OF THE LATERAL SKIRTS. YOU CAN SEE THOSE MOUNTING TABS IN THE UPPER LEFT PICTURE YOU POSTED. IT APPEARS YOU HAVE A LATER SADDLE NOSE BRACKET. THE 48-49 SADDLES LIKE YOU HAVE USED A BRACKET WITH TWO SIDE PLATES, A NOSE SPACER, INNER BUSHING , A NOSE ATTACHING BOLT AND TWO MOUNTING BOLTS FROM THE SIDE PLATES TO THE FRAME. OF INTEREST (AT LEAST TO ME) I HAVE SEVERAL ORIGINAL EXAMPLES OF THESE SADDLES. SOME HAD A THIRD LONG SPRING THAT HOOKED TO THE TWO LONG SPRINGS AND RAN CROSSWAY UNDER THE SADDLE CENTER. PROBABLY MEANT TO SUPPORT THE LARGER OR HEAVIER POSTERIOR. I DOUBT THIS WAS AN ADD-ON BY OWNER OR DEALER AS IT WOULD REQUIRE SADDLE REMOVAL TO DO SO. THE CANVAS AS USED FOR THESE SADDLES IN THAT DAY WAS THE SAME AS USED ON FARM REAPERS. STILL AVAILABLE TODAY AND IN STOCK WHERE GET MINE. THERE WERE TWO VERSIONS OF THE COVER. YOU HAVE THE FIRST TYPE WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE TO MY KNOWLEDGE. THE SECOND VERSION WAS A SO-CALLED "COACH" COVERING AND WAS USED ON HORSE DRAWN VEHICLES AND SOME CAR EXTERIORS. IF YOU NEED ANY OF THE SADDLE PARTS, I WASTED A FAIR AMOUNT OF TIME MAKING THEM AND THEY ARE ON THE SHELF. I MADE ENOUGH SETS TO LAST ABOUT 75 YRS AT CURRENT SALES RATE. I have redone the frame and springs already ZTh ecloth should be an easy thing, but has anyone any idea how the seat is connected to the frame ? If I check the bottom of the seat I see two clips which will fold around the frame, but are thos the only things holding the seat to the frame ? Thanks again Joep |
