62 Scat. Think I have a bad ignition coil. Not finding the -58 coil but lots of -55 coils. Are they the same?

No. And I wouldn't suggest using a 29574-55 in your Scat unless someone else has done it before and and had no problems.

The 29574-55 has two leads and a hole in it for the spark plug wire. Vendor photos don't show the plug wire hole, and the plug wire is sold separately.

That coil has two windings (it's really a transformer). The spinning rotor induces a ~6 volt AC current in the inner winding. The inner winding induces a ~10,000 volt AC current in the outer winding to which the spark plug wire is connected.

I don't know the electrical characteristics of the inner winding - it might not be the same. And leaving the spark plug wire hole empty - the 10,000 volts might discharge into the inner winding and quickly destroy the coil.

What you want is either the 29574-58 ignition and stoplight coil or the 29575-55 lighting coil. Each of these have a single winding. Duane Taylor posted that he thinks these coils are the same except for the terminal ends and that he has NOS coils for sale!

I believe the lighting coil has one ring and one funky connector, and the ignition coil has two ring connectors. They may not be exactly the same electrically, but I'll bet they are pretty close, and should work in either position.

Hey Duane - could you measure one of each type with a good ohmmeter? If they have the same wire size and the same number of turns (length of wire), they should read the same on the ohmmeter.
