wheel questions

Postby sureshotbob » Wed Dec 26, 2018 8:31 pm

I was going through some of my parts today and found that I have two 3.25X19 front rims with brake drums with speedo gears but no braking plate.
I also have one 3.50x18 front rims with drum and speedo gear and two rear rim with drum with no braking plates.
My question is are the rims and brake drums the same for a LW 125 and a LW 165 ? I know the Hummers use the 3.50x18 rim but I think a saw somewhere that the Hummer and LW 165 are different.

OK here is what is confusing me .this is a quote from the service manual {Model 165 wheel hub is not interchangeable with Hummer, Super 10,etc.rear wheel hubs}
Also the two 3.50x18 rear wheel rims I have have 49 tooth sprockets so what did they come off ?
I would like to use one of the 3.25x19 front rims with brake drum and speedo gear on my 1948 S model build .I'd be doing a complete rebuild of the hub , rim ,spokes and brakes.

The model 165 wheel is not interchangable with the Hummer and Super 10 because the axles/hubs are different.
The 165 wheel (and the 48-52 125 wheels) use 2 roller bearings, the B/BT models use one roller bearing and one needle bearing. If you use the 55 and later rear axle and wheel for the B/BT model wheel, it will bolt right in to the 48-55 S&ST models.
You have 2 3.50x18 wheels with 49 tooth sprockets. If the hubs have 2 roller bearings, the wheels are for 1956 to 1959 ST models, if they have a needle bearing and a roller bearing, they are for 60 and later, all models

The 3.25x 19 wheel is correct for your 48 model

Keith the 1948 build is kind of on the back burner at this time but I'm still thinking about it. I have at least 3 frames an girder front forks and a motor also a few misc. parts.

The one I'll probably build first is the Hummer December 1958 rolling chassis that is missing the motor and gas tank.

So after talking to Mutt I'll be looking for a 1959 motor for that one.

Some clarification please... My hubs are from a 1955 ST 165, but I want to set the front wheel up for a girder front fork (See my intro for more info on why). I presumed this was a simple matter of swapping the later single nut axle (43874-51) with the two-nut axle (43876-47), but I found this axle to be too short on the brake drum side. Can someone help me understand what else is different, and maybe even post an image of the 48-52 hub and axle assembly from the parts book? I only have the later one covering the '55.

Not sure that can be done without going and doing some measuring. I am certain that you will need to use a front backing plate from the 48-50 model . The 51 and later front drum has a spotwelded on seal ring on it, but I think the 48-50 backing plate will still fit inside the drum.

Thanks, Mutt. After seeing your response, I did some further research. I see that both the drum and the backing plate are changed. Here are pictures of the two hubs.
