Solo saddles

Postby bobscogin » Fri Jan 25, 2019 12:12 am

Can someone elaborate on the differences between the 52001-50 (53 to 65 ST, B, BT, BTU) and the 52003-62 (62 to 65 BTF, BTH) solo saddles. Trying to identify the correct one for my '63 Scat.

the 50 solo seat is approx 13 x 13, the 62 seat is like 14 long by 12 wide. These are just close dimensions. from memory,

The MUTT memory is good and much better than my 89 YO "stock" memory so I have to cheat and measure those pans.

The first pans, 1950 and later measure :
Length, 14 1/8in. and measuring 4 of them they were plus/minus 1/8 which is of no importance for a seat pan.
Width, 13 1/4 in. (widest part) with very little variation on 4 pans.

The late pans:
Length 14 5/8 in
Width, 11 1/4 in

Of note: The first pans (1950) had a U strap front mounting bracket which focused the operational stress at the rear of the strap and caused the pan to fracture just behind the strap. Consequently, very few are found.
The second version of the mounting bracket used the long, preformed one which was very functional.

Mutt and Duane, thanks for helping. I've got 3 saddles off of Pacers and all appear to be the -50 earlier style. None have useable covers, so since I'm going to have a pan recovered, I may as well try to find the correct -62 one for the Scat. Anybody got one? Thanks!

Did I read somewhere Harley used the same seat on the 50's 125's, that was used on the K model Harleys the same years? Stan

I'm far from being an expert, but all of my research shows that they didn't use the same seat as the K or early XL. Those seats used a separate mounting "T-Bar" bracket that bolted to the saddle for mounting. The lightweight seat pans had an integral mounting bracket that was riveted on. Size/shape could be different too.

I may be mistaken, but I think the solo saddle pan for scats has a bit more upturn in the front, than on the other lightweights.

Does anyone have a photo they could post of the underside of the Scat saddle?
