Ball retainer question 1960 Super 10

Postby Mike C. » Thu Mar 28, 2019 6:49 pm

First question re reassembly of '60 motor...

The ball in the retainer doesn't seem to have much spring pressure on it. Loose in the retainer, but if you press it down you can feel the spring resistance.

1) Should it be pressed up against the top of the retainer by the spring?
2) If I need to refresh it, it seems I can press it up and out easily enough, but how would you press the replacement retainer and washer back down?
3) Finally, if I do need to replace the spring/ball/retainer and washer, does anyone have a source? I'm betting Mutt will, and would have reached out directly, but figure the purpose of these boards is to provide info so it would be more beneficial to post it publicly as I couldn't find any info on the old boards.

Thanks in advance!

if ya stretch the spring so the ball sits tight against the retainer housing, it will make it hard to shift. Where it is now is fine.
