What is the dia of the std 165 rod rollers ? .250 ?

Thank you Sir. Maybe you can answer another question I have about this lower end . I've never built one of these motors before so I'm reading all I can and feeling my way along. When I took it down there were shims behind the gen side bearing, shims behind the sprocket inner bearing (both sets of shims were between the bearing and the flywheels) and shims behind the output sprocket. If I'm reading the manual right there should only be shims behind the sprocket ? The shims total .055 in thickness . I test fitted the left flywheel into the case with new bearings and put all the shims behind the sprocket and obtained an end play of .002 . Is it normal to have shims on the crank assembly besides the ones behind the sprocket ?

shims between the left outer bearing and seal housing on 1948-54 models, behind the sprocket on all models 1955 thru 1962 models and shims behind sprocket and between flywheels and bearings on the 63 to 66 models

it's a 55 st but it was raced and somebody has been in it. it sounds like it was shimmed like the 63-66 models . what was the reason behind the change in 63 ? did the flywheels change with the 175 ? what was different internally on the 175s ?

the thickness of the flywheels. 64 to 66 used compression plates with 2 holes (instead of the 48-63 type with just a center hole)

Ah soo.... i see. OK, one last question and i'll leave you alone ;-) I see in the parts book it gives 3 different part #s for the 3 crank bearings. It looks like the generator side uses a sealed bearing ? Is it sealed on both sides ? The two sprocket side bearings look identical and aren't sealed . They look the same but have two different #s . ???? And lastly, apart from the sealing, they have the same width, i.d. and o.d. so can you use 3 identical sealed bearings and remove the seals from two of them ? Thanks.

the 48-54 models all used 3 open bearings (no seals) the 55-66 models used 2 open bearings and the gen/mag side used a bearing with only one side sealed The seal goes towards the gen/mag. Running sealed bearings is not recommended, as when the grease goes away (and it does) you will be running dry bearings
