Muffler

Postby Bgguy » Tue Jun 19, 2018 5:58 pm

This muffler was on my 1956 165 when my Dad purchased it in 1964. It seems home made to me, but I wonder if any one has seen one like it. I am in the process of restoring my 165 and have included a picture of where I am in that process, but still have a ways to go. However, my 165 looks a lot better than when my Dad gave it to me a few years ago and all the components were disassembled, dirty, rusty, etc.

The rest of your bike looks great, but that muffler needs some help. It's either homemade or from something else, as is the clamp.

When I started looking through the Parts Catalogs, I found the whole exhaust-pipe/muffler situation is more complicated than I had previously thought. I only went up to 1959.

Code: Select all
Year / Model         Exh. Pipe    Muffler
1948 - 1950          65439-47     65240-47
1951 - 1953          65439-51     65241-47
1954                 65439-51A    65241-47      Exh pipe uses 65533-54 Ring, Muffler has welded-on bracket
1955 - 1956 ST       65439-55     65241-47A     Exh pipe uses 65533-54 Ring, Muffler has welded-on bracket
1957 - 1959 ST       65439-55     65241-47B     Exh pipe uses 65533-54 Ring, Muffler uses a separate bracket

1955 - 1956 B        65440-55     65241-47A     Muffler has welded-on bracket
1957 - 1959 B        65440-55     65241-47B     Muffler has separate bracket

Exhaust Pipes
The 65439-51A, one-year-only, was news to me. The 65439-47, -51, and -51A pipes have two bends.
The 65439-55 and 65440-55 pipes have one bend.

Mufflers
All of the 65241-xx mufflers are essentially the same, but...
The 65241-47 and 65241-47A mufflers have welded-on brackets. No idea of the difference between the -47 and 47A
The 65241-47B muffler uses a separate bracket.

I've learned to NOT rely on the parts catalog. If you do you you end up putting the front fender on a 1948 Model S on backwards. (Seen it a few times). Confusion? Just remember that parts catalogs had to be created and printed 'back then' way ahead of corporate and assembly line changes. There may or may not be -A parts. To prove, how do you document them? In original packaging? Anybody out there have examples to share?
