125s and 165st carb differences

Postby Emerica1975 » Tue Dec 07, 2021 10:03 am

I just got a carb attaching bushing and went to put my carb on and the carb won’t fit. The carb is now to small. My engine is a 1956st and I thought the carb I had (L&L) was correct. Am I just stupid or is the carb body different for the S model and ST model engine’s? Thanks

yes, there are 3 different L&L carb bodies. What is the o.d of the intake nipple and what is the i.d. of your carb body with no bushing in it?

I just got to work but when I get home I’ll check the diameters of the two and let you know. Thanks for the quick reply.
Much appreciated!!

The HOW TO RESTORE folders at this site will shed some light on the differences between years and models.
Additionally, a parts book will show part numbers and their applications (year and model).
Both of these are excellent sources.

Mutt is also invaluable.

I just measured the carb I have and the area on the cylinder where the carb attaches. The carb is .98 of an inch and the attaching area on the cylinder is .97 of an inch. I do have both parts books but I’m a little confused on what matches what as far as carb to cylinder. And I wasn’t aware of the 3 different L&L carb body’s until Mutt reply earlier today.
Thanks for the help.

You have an S-2 Carb body (1953 only) the factory bushing with just a strip 5/8" wide and .010" thick fiber cut to length (.980 x 3.12 =3.058) about 3 1/16" long. Cut a paper strip that long and see if it is exactly fits the carb spigot without overlapping.

The strip of paper 3 1//16” fits just perfect without overlapping. And your right on the money about my carburetor. It says L2 on the float chamber lid.

you'll need to cut `a piece of metal shim stock to actually use. A .010 brass feller gauge will work if ya cant find any fiber paper in that size

As was mentioned, there are 3 similar carburetor bodies used for different applications.
The float bowl covers are interchangeable.
These carburetors have been touched by many over the past (up to) 73 years.
The stamping on the cover may not match the metering jet size or i.d. of the carburetor body, less bushing.

Additionally, these carburetors were in use by other folks as well as Harley-Davidson and may not be stamped at all.
I have an L&L I found in Hawaii which is not stamped S-* or H-D.

IAC, I am positive you will get this sorted out and the bike on the road soon.

The unmarked float bowl covers were parts couter replacement parts sold by the Dealers. Inidan used oneof these L&L carbs with an adjustable main jet. It was a S-5
