Compression plates

Postby Emerica1975 » Sun Jan 02, 2022 8:16 pm

I have been slowly putting my 1956 165st engine back together and today I’m having a bugger of a time getting the compression plates staked in place. I thought about useing Indian head gasket sealer to help secure them but I doubt it would help. Does anyone have any advice or tricks on how to get the compression plates to stay put? Thanks

they have ti fit nice and flat in their recesses to start with. You can use a piece of 3/4" i.d. pipe cut to length and the nut that holds the sprocket on to hold the plate down whilst ya stake it. Same for the generator side, but use the bolt and a washer to hold the pipe tight. If all esle fails, send them to me and I will stake them for you. I have a jig that pushes down in four equal places and it makes the staking easy

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice and tip. If I can’t get it I’ll see about mailing it.

I actually realized I have 2 more questions. What has been the best way to clean out the recessed area that the compression plates seat in? And what size punch is best to use for stakeing the plates? Thanks

A die grinder with a 1/8" 4 flute carbide end mill to clean out the recesses. 3/16" punch
