Here's where to ask questions and get answers

magneto nut

Postby dale137 » Tue Mar 08, 2022 9:27 pm

hello,
I couldn't get my 62 scat to fire up, thought it was the points, coil or condenser. Took the plug out and i couldnt see spark. So i put my small black and decker 7.2 on to spin the motor and the magneto nut came off.
Is this a big repair? What is involved? I cant tell if this is the way it is supposed to be or not. Nothing came off with the magneto nut but it wont thread back on either. Ive owned the bike since 1970 and would like to have it run. thanks for your answers and expertise.

you broke the end of the magneto shaft off. You will have to tear the motor completely down and split the flywheels to replace it. I can do that for ya if you want to send me the flywheels email me pigstye13@aol.com

I suggest you follow Mutt's recommendation, but I fixed mine on the bike by drilling and tapping the remains of the shaft and threading in a stub that mimicked the original shaft. Not sure if it's permanent, but it still runs.

I made a jig to center the drill. See pics

A word of extreme caution: If you remove the magnet, be VERY careful. They are not available. Ask me how I know. I got very lucky twice, first finding a replacement magnet, second that this scheme worked.

Mutt has a special puller that he fabricated.

The other problem is, you have destroyed the center on the end of the shaft so now you can't put the crank assembly between centers for final truing.

I suppose you could use V blocks instead, but I've never done it that way.

Just a heads up on the Magneto ,.Rotating magnet PN 25971-55.

As Mutt would tell you, this is a critical and very scarce part that is frequently broken when removed by the inexperienced.
However, that part is available in both original and rebuilt to new condition.
Currently, I rebuild the broken ones here and then send them to Mutt for recharging as I cannot do that here.
Any questions, please feel free to ask.
