L & L carb body

Postby Emerica1975 » Sun Mar 13, 2022 11:47 pm

Does it matter which L&L carb body I have as long as I have all the right inner parts. I ask this question because I’m not sure how to tell which carb body I have and the parts book shows 2 different part numbers for those carb body’s. And if it does matter then which carb body is for the 165?
Thanks!

There are differences between carburetor bodies.
There is an S1, S2, and an S3 stamped in the float bowl cover. Additionally, there is an H-D stamped in the cover.
There may be no stampings on the float bowl cover.
The markings on the float bowl cover may not positively identify your carburetor since parts interchange.

Off hand, I do not know the exact differences between the carburetor bodies. Search the topics in this forum for the differences or, for the short answer, Mutt can give you the answer to your question.

measure your spigot on the mounting end of the carb. The 165 is larger than the 125, even wihout the mounting bushing installed in the carb, the 125 carb will not fit over then intake nipple on the 165

The 125 body is smaller than the 165. If you have the correct 165 parts then the throttle slide and the cap on top will not fit on the 125 body'

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like the carb I have is for the 125. I’ll have to look for the 165 carb. If anyone has an extra I’m looking to buy one.

I wanted to post some more about the problem I’m running into with my L and L carb. I managed to get another carb body that I’m told is part number 27500-53a and that it’s for the 165 engine. However the carb attaching bushing I have is still definitely to big for this carb. The carb will fit over the spigot on the cylinder without the bushing. But not with the bushing. And the new carb body I got is different than my original carb. The new one has a screw that looks to set the throttle piston height. Also to add to my ??? The throttle piston caps and throttle pistons I have seem to be interchangeable even though there supposed to be for different size carbs. I.E 125 & 165
Sorry for the long question but ultimately am I still looking for yet a 3rd L&L carb body?

You have a 1953 only 165 carb body and a 1954 to 59 cylinder. Remove the bushing and throw it away. You can either buy the proper bushing here https://store.redravenproducts.com/inde ... ch=bushing or get a piece of shim stock .010" thick x 1/2" wide and cut your own. A feeler gauge works perfect

Thanks for the info. I just ordered the correct bushing. Is the other size 165 L&L carb hard to find? I’m always looking for spare parts. I’m of the belief you can never have enough spares.

yes, they are almost non existant these days. All the ones ya find are cracked. Soon, everyone will start having to run a non stock carb. Im fixing to put a 19mm Del Orto on my buddy's 165. Super tunable
