Shifter Ratchet Ball Spring

Postby Bailey » Sun Mar 20, 2022 10:34 pm

Hi
Can anyone help out with the length of the Ratchet ball spring. I am doing a test assembly on my 55st trans and the spring is too short to push the 5/16 ball into the ratchet detents. My spring is about 3/4 inch and doesn't contact the ball. Thanks

if you stretch the spring to the point of having no gap, between the ball and it's housing, it will be nearly impossible to shift

Can you use shims under the spring to get the performance you seek?

That would still pose the same problem Shimming the ball closer to the end of the detent ball housing will only make the shifting even harder

Hobby Shops have thin washers which could be used as a shim to take up the gap between the spring and the ball. The ball retainer (cylinder), p/n 34375-47 will only allow the ball a limited amount of exposure. Placing too many shims will increase the tension of the spring, causing difficulty shifting. The proper amount of shims will maintain spring tension, take up the gap between the spring and the ball, and allow the ball to make contact with the gear shifter ratchet. Since you are testing, test away!

Good information. Can you suggest a specific hobby shop source for these shims? Are they available online?

I only have limited experience with my old Radio Controlled VW Bug when I was rebuilding her.
I would suggest you start with a local Hobby Shop who deals with Radio Controlled Vehicles. Next I would just Google RC Shims and see what appears. Amazon and AMAIN HOBBIES popped up when I Googled.

Well I figured it out. The spring I have is correct. I had a bur on the retainer from trying to drive it out 45 years ago and it prevented the ball from going down into the retainer and sitting on the spring. All is good now. Thanks
