Triple tree

Here's a question for Mutt: Even though I cleaned the paint out of the leg sockets of my '62 Scat triple tree I can't insert the leg without destroying the paint on the leg tube. I know cast iron is brittle. How likely am I to break the leg socket if I try and put a wedge into the bolt/clamp slot to open it up a little?

I use a screw driver as a wedge. It doesn't take much to spread the fork apart in order to slide the fork tube through without damaging the paint.

I'm sure Mutt will have a more accurate answer, but I really don't think that part is cast iron. IMO, cast iron is not a good material choice for this part. I'm guessing its forged steel.

You should be able to open the gap with a screw driver blade driven into the gap. Don't go crazy, tap the screwdriver blade in just enough so the legs will fit without messing up the paint.

Again, Mutt may have better or different advice, and if so, I defer to him.

I never thought of it being forged steel but that makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
