Ready to start

Postby AdamW » Wed Jul 04, 2018 6:24 pm

The 63 Scat I've been working on is ready to go. Carb refreshed. All electrics replaced including wiring. Adjusted points, timing. Got spark. How much compression should I have on this model? 100psi? Tried kicking starting but no dice. I'm assuming the start procedure is different on these? Did not find anything in the manual. If there is a procedure, please point me to it.
Thanks

100 psi is fine. Did ya primer the cylinder with gas (if it's a fresh rebuilt motor)?

I put some gas in the cylinder, replaced the plug, and nothing happened. Pulled the plug and re-verified spark (yellow). I'm going to look at timing again and maybe connect a bulb to get a more accurate setting there.

Also, I'm showing compression to be low, well below 100psi. The piston is .30 which I believe is the largest oversize. What are the options for cylinder repair/restoration other than hoping one comes up on ebay?

I sent the cylinder out to get bored as well as new piston and rings. Currently .05 Got it back together and got about 6 more psi in compression. Before cylinder service 34psi, after is showing 40psi. It certainly feels like there is more compression. Did a leak down, piston at TDC as you do. Air pouring out of exhaust. Some on the intake(throttle probably closed). Plugged the intake and exhaust and the motor held air. I sprayed the to pend gaskets and did not show any leaks there (top or bottom). I'm not familiar enough with two strokes to know whats' normal.

In addition....The problem could be related to the kick starter. It slips the gear if I put too much effort into it. Not treating it like a dirt bike kick start but within reason.
As always, any advice/direction appreciated -Adam

40 psi is WAY low. You should have at least 80-90 psi You would need to remove the entire clutch assembly to see what is wrong with the kicker. It could be one of 5 things or a combination of all of them

Yeah figured I'll have to remove the cover. Hoping not to have to remove the clutch but , oh well. What is the threadsize on the bolts needed to keep the clutch springs compressed when removing? I scavenged bolts off the bike during the 1st teardown but dont want to do that again.

(2) 1/4-28 x 1" long bolts and nuts, a 3/4" deep socket and ratchet and a couple of big flat tip screw drivers are all ya need if your chain has a master link

I have the clutch assembly removed. What are the 5 things to look for?
