Here's where to ask questions and get answers

As Mutt and I have asked, we really need to know if you are looking for a primary/secondary coil that the spark plug wire attaches to, or a primary only coil for lighting or other non-ignition purposes?

The Bendix Scintilla magneto referred to at the beginning of this thread is for ignition only. As used in the '55 and later Hummers, the magneto assembly is larger, and both coils have approximately the same shape and dimensions.

I have never seen a primary only coil the size and shape of the magneto coil shown at the beginning of this thread.

Thanks for posting that picture. Hopefully It clarifies what the op is looking for. This is a primary/secondary ignition coil. This coil has both the primary and secondary windings and the spark plug wire connects to the little tab that sticks out. While similar in design, this is larger than the coil shown at the beginning of this thread. Being larger, it won't fit that stator plate and laminated pole shoes.

Unfortunately, this is what happens to these coils over time. Sometimes they work even though they look this bad. If it does still work, coat it with some 5 minute epoxy and you should be good to go. If not, you'll have to see if you can find another one, or try a whole different system as has been described in the earlier posts.

Oh, BTW, if you can get this coil to work or find another one that does, DON'T SOLDER THE HT LEAD TO THE TAB. You don't want a rigid connection there because vibration can cause that tab to break off, and when it does, you're SOL. Just poke the HT lead wire through the tab and twist it back around itself. Then make a few wraps with electrical tape around the coil and wire to hold it in place.

this coil still works, but you can sometimes buy a new replacement coil. Just google Mercury 399-125 coil. Just dont fall for the one that hasa huge circle of solder instead of the tang. Its in the wrong spot and youll work a long time to make it fit and fuction. The good ones only come up about once a year. One guy has a company that makes them. He buys 100 and sells everyone of them pretty quick. Last time late last year, I bought 5 so I would have some for various customers motors This one, tho none is stock, is a true drop in. https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/p ... MER399-125

Here is a coil for the part number 399-125. It’s on eBay.

Those are the only ones that work, but they also require some work. The red wire needs to be extended about 2"
