Home Built Air Cleaner

Postby MRJR68 » Mon Dec 12, 2022 12:53 pm

My 1955 Hummer came into our family when my older brother bought it in 1964. Money was very tight for a 16 year old kid. Since the air cleaner was missing my brother built his own. He made his own using an old metal shoe polish can. The filter media was Mom''s metal pot scrubber that Bill coated with oil. Bill made the holes in the lid using a screwdriver and a hammer. For the mounting holes, Bill used a nail. He soldered in a piece of screen so the pot scrubber stayed out of the carburetor. Not bad for a 16 year old kid. I think I will keep this on my restored Hummer.

Back in the day, copper mesh pot scrubbers was a common OEM air filter element. On 2 strokes, the blow back made them self oiling.

Speaking of blowback.. Mutt, have you ever run into anyone that adapted a reed vale assembly to these bikes?

Yes, There was one made that would bolt right on to any B or BT model with Tillotson carb., I have one tucked away some where in the parts room.

Here is what they look like. I had to go dig in the parts room after dinner to find them
