Splitting cases

Postby AdamW » Fri Aug 13, 2021 5:26 pm

('63 Scat) About a year ago I resealed my cases with an RTV silicone gasket product. Unfortunately I have to split them again. Using the method in the service book this time is resulting in bent screws and the cases not giving up the seal. I dont want to apply any more force than I am and risk breaking the cases. Anyone have experience with this? Any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Can you fit a sharp knife into the gasket material? This may take a long time but it is sure better than damaging the cases.
An Exato knife or utility knife?

Assuming you are referring to the locating dowels. I was not aware that we could (or should) do this. How should they be removed?

Not really. I applied the black gasket material with my finger to both sides.

You just need to make ya a drift. 1/4" small diameter x 1/4" long and the large o.d. should be about 1 1/2" long and .015 or so smaller than the i.d. of the hole in the case. Heat the cases are each locating dowel with a butane torch, the drive them right out
