1960 Super 10 Project Update

Postby Mike C. » Mon May 27, 2019 10:13 pm

Finally got the little Super 10 all together. Been working on this project for quite a while.
Lucky for me I have a Guardian Angel on my shoulder named Mutt who has been a great source of parts and a shitton of information. Mutt also rebuilt my flywheels and punched out the cylinder as noted in earlier post. I probably should have sent the whole motor to him but I really wanted to give it a whack myself.

Everything seems good. Good compression. Good spark. But still trying to sort her out. It will start and run for about 5-6 seconds then stops. I'm thinking it's a fuel issue. Working on it...

Couple pics here showing her as she sits right now. Long way from where I found her.

Used as much of the original bike as possible. Went with the high level pipe and adapted the muffler. I know the muffler is not stock but I really like the look. The ignition switch was also original to the bike and OEM. Everything was re-wired from the ground up.

The funky triangular metal plates were on the bike when I found her. I left them alone as they are part of her history.

Hi Mike, Great job!

Have you tried pushing your bike to get it started? Run beside it (or even better, have someone push), jump on, pull the clutch, drop into 2nd, and let out the clutch.

It's always a thrill when one comes back to life.

Thanks Chris!

I may just end up having to try that. Hoping to get her to fire up and keep running tomorrow. Set the carb, magneto, and everything else to factory specs. Plug is set at .030 per advice of Mutt. Need her to run so I can adjust!

I'll update as things develop.

Best regards,
Mike

She's gorgeous, and a real inspiration. If you were able to take what you started with and get to that, there's home for mine.

Assuming you have checked all the obvious/usual possible problems for a start but won't run--:

You may have a broken, defective mag rotor which can suffer hub fracture during removal.
This mag rotor is comprised of 10 parts: The pot metal frame, brass face plate (10-86646), 4 pole magnets and 4 rivets.

IF the rotor suffers a frame fracture at the hub during removal the mag becomes a "loose" group of parts and will not function as intended. This is
not a new or rare problem with the result being a hard/expensive part to find in good condition.

The solution is to rebuild these mag rotors. It requires tooling/fixture design which is currently in progress. Questions/comments , please ask.
