What are these holes ?

Postby billc » Wed Jul 24, 2019 8:38 pm

Anybody have any ideas what these 4 holes behind the flywheel are for ? They're tapped 8-32 and are on both case halves. They had something I'm guessing was epoxy plugging them . All of them except one were drilled right through the case and would leak compression if left open.

That's where someone installed some compression plates at sometime in it's life. Looks like someone may have opened up the transfer ports too

this is the motor that had the puckett piston in it. should i put plates back in it ? i thought they might be related to some sort of crankcase stuffing but didn't think there was enough side clearance on the wheels to matter.

i didn't get the original cylinder with the motor. the one i bought for it is unmodified stock bored .030 . the head looks stock but i haven't cc'd it. is there a head mod besides decking ? i didn't get the plates either. how thick should they be ?

That was possibly a Jack Catrell built motor Jack was the chief tuner for Leonard Andres' San Diego Harley dealership in the 50's. He builtsomereally fast Hummer motors. The plates are .055"aluminum. Jack's motors used high crank case pressures to achieve horsepower gains. The head was welded up to half the original size and hemi'd, giving a compression ratio of 14:1 !!!! But ya got to run nitro. Best thing to do with the head is to weld it up, about 5/8" to the inside, from the outside of the original combustion chamber, then machine the weld down 12º and a total of 7/16" wide all the way around. This gives ya a nice modern squish band and a compression ratio of around 10:1, so's ya can run regular gas

i've tried tracking the previous owners of the motor in an attempt to get it's background but i hit a dead end. do you have any pictures of that head mod or links to more info about rodding a 165 ? it also has some 4 petal "flower" looking pieces between the crankpin (stepped) and the flywheels. i'll post a pic later today.
